Rio de Janeiro
As the tourism industry in Rio de Janeiro is long-established, there is no shortage of hotels in the city. However, there is little variation in the types of accommodation types available. You will mostly encounter high-rise buildings, but if you look around you can find some interesting pousadas and historic hotels.
Like other tourist resorts, hotel room prices in Rio de Janeiro rise in accordance to the season. Rio de Janeiro’s high season is between December and February and prices can increase by 300% at New Year and Carnaval. If you want to visit during this high season, it is recommended that you book your hotel well in advance to avoid disappointment!
Copacabana is the most well-known hotel area in Rio de Janeiro. Here you can find a number of cheap hotels situated close to beautiful beach. On the other hand, if you prefer something more sophisticated, you may want to stay in the famous Copacabana Palace Hotel. The Copacabana area is very well-connected with a great bus service and reliable Metro line, which means that you can easily visit places farther out.
Barra da Tijuca is home to the city’s newest luxury hotels. These hotels are great if you enjoy spending a lot of your holiday time in the hotel bathing in the pool or playing tennis.
However, Barra da Tijuca is certainly not for everyone as its hotels are anywhere between thirty minutes to an hour cab journey from the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema.
The Gloria, Catete and Flamengo neighbourhoods are other great places to stay as they are just a quarter of an hour subway ride away from Copacabana and downtown. In these historic neighbourhoods you can plenty of cheap hotels and a number of luxury hotels which rival those in Copacabana.
While you may see a number of cheap hotels advertised in Praça Mauá, it is not a good idea to stay here as downtown Rio becomes a red-light district in the evening.
