Lefkada Holidays | The Paradise Of Blue

Anyone who is somewhat familiar with Greece will immediately recognise major destinations such as Athens, Mykonos and Corfu.  However, there is another location known as Lefkada and it could very well represent the best-kept secret that this massive archipelago has to offer.  Found within the warm waters of the Ionian Sea, this island is its amazing climate and its sunny days.  The good news is that the entire location is found one one hour (by car) away from Aktion National Airport.  This hub serves domestic as well as a selection of international flights.

The Nearby Beaches

As with many of the Greek Islands, Lefkada is partially defined by its amazing beaches. On the west coast of the island, you can find some of the most beautiful beaches of Europe (Porto Katsiki, Kathisma, Egremnoi) that have spectacular views of the crystal clear Ionian Sea. Egremnoi beach in particular, ranks No1 for the bluest waters in the world!
Generally, the waters in Lefkada are quite calm and their clarity make them ideal locations for activities such as snorkelling and scuba diving.  Many international resorts are found close to their shores and you could choose to stay at one of these venues if you hope to enjoy seaside access.  Some notable stretches of sand include Nydri, Vasiliki, Agios Nikitas and Nikiana.

Retreats and Uninhabited Islands

Lefkada is also famous for a handful of uninhabited islands that can be found near to its shores.  One example is the island of Madouri.  While you are not likely to encounter any hotels, there are ferry rides which can take you out for a day trip if you wish to get away from the tourists.  Similar retreats such as Pavesso Country Retreat are ideal spots for a honeymoon or a similar romantic getaway.  These locations will naturally become booked early, so check their availability in advance of your departure.

Lefkada City

This city is the most populous on the island and it is generally comprised of small structures that have been built to withstand earthquakes.  Thus, their structures are rather unique when compared to those located on the mainland.  Although this city is not very large, there are still some interesting attractions to enjoy.  The Lefkada Cultural Centre, a large public library, Theotokos Church and the ancient Faneromeni Monastery are some shining examples.  There are also many quite bed-and-breakfast hotels and restaurants to be experienced here if you hope to absorb traditional Greek hospitality and cuisine.

When to Visit

This question will revolve around your tolerance of warm temperatures.  The mercury has been known to rise slightly above 40ºC in the summer, so those with health issues are best arriving here in the late spring or the early autumn. In fact, even the winter months are quite agreeable. With an average flight time from London at just over three hours (non-stop), arriving here is generally not a problem.  There are few rainy days and those which do occur generally take place between the months of October and February.  So, be sure to check the weather forecasts in advance so that you will not encounter any unforeseen issues.
