Barcelona is the capital city of Catalonia, and behind Madrid the largest city in all of Spain. Barcelona boasts a proud heritage and an iconic history. The center of Barcelona is called the Gothic Quarter, or “Barri Gotic” in Spanish. Many buildings in this area are dated from the medieval times, including some that date back as far as the Roman founding.

Of course there are more modern sites as well, including several popular museums including the Museum of Art of Catalonia, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona, and the Fundacio Joan Miro Picasso Museum. They all hold important collections of world-renowned art and works from the greatest artists in history.

Barcelona is also home to several parks, including twelve historic parks and five botanical parks. The largest park is Montjuic at 203 hectares, located on the mountain Montjuic. The second largest park, Parc de la Cuitadella, also holds the Barcelona Zoo as well as many other sites including the Parliament buildings of the city. Other popular parks include the Labyrinth Park which contains a garden maze, Guinardo Park, Oreneta Castle Park, and PortAdventura, an amusement park that rates as one of the most popular in Europe with over 3 million visitors per year.

Barcelona is most famous for its picturesque beaches, and of the top beach cities was rated as the number one city in the world according to National Geographic magazine. The beaches of Barcelona total over 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) of coastline. The most popular are Sant Sebastia and Barceloneta beaches, which are also the largest and have the most visitors. Several other beaches have opened as a result of Barcelona hosting the 1992 Summer Olympics, including Nova Icaria, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Llevant, and Nova Mar Bella.

The Mediterranean climate of Barcelona is one of the best features of the city. With an average annual temperature of 20 degrees Celsius during the day and 11 degrees Celsius at night, any time of year is a great time to visit. The water temperature is similarly mild, with an average of approximately 18 degrees Celsius year round. Barcelona also has one of the best number of hours of daylight in Europe, with even winter months having an average of over 10 hours of daylight per day, compared to only 8 in London. Snow is very rare in Barcelona, with frost being more common in the hills or mountain areas during the night in winter. Rain is more common, however the average days of rainfall are only 55 over the full year.
