Matera Holiday Flights
Matera is a city located within the southern portion of Italy and it has gained a reputation as the “subterranean City” due to its numerous underground passages. It is quite unique due to the fact that it is thought to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. Scientists believe that people have lived here since at least the 10th millennium BCE. It therefore makes sense that you might be interesting in visiting such an amazing location (due in no small part to its warm temperatures throughout the year). Still, planning ahead is always a good idea and in order to take logistics into consideration, we have put together a quick guide involving airports and flight times.
The city of Matera itself has no internal airport. The nearest terminal is Bari Airport (BRI). This is an international hub and it is found approximately one hour and 30 minutes by train from the city centre. However, it could also be a good idea to look into public transportation and taxis. The reason for this observation is that some have observed that the numerous train stops can be avoided by using other means.
There are numerous international airlines served by Bari Airport. Some of the most relevant for travellers arriving from the United Kingdom include:
• British Airways
However, there might be times when you are taking a whirlwind tour and are planning on arriving at Matera from another European destination. A handful of additional carriers that you can choose from are Volotea, S7 Airlines, Luxair, Lufthansa and easyJet.
Flight Times and Additional Details
The average flight time between London and Bari is approximately two hours and 45 minutes. There tend to be daily flights although check ahead if you are planning a trip during busier times of the year such as the holidays or the height of the summer. Also, do not forget that this flight time does NOT take into account the extra travel duration between Bari and Matera proper.
Bari Airport serves just over 4.3 million passengers every year and thanks to renovations that took place in 2005, there are now four jet bridges to choose from as well as a multi-level car park. This is why it could be a good option to consider a car hire service from Bari to Matera; especially if you have been hoping to see some of the nearby countryside.
When to Visit
As the airport as well as the town of Matera are both not far from the beaches, they can become quite crowded at times. If you are looking to enjoy lower airfares, it could be a smart idea to schedule flights during the so-called “off season”. This generally occurs in autumn and again in early spring. If you are looking to further reduce your overall expenses, book at least eight weeks in advance and choose a flight that has a connection with another city; these are always cost-effective options.
