Basilica San Marco
One of the most famous sights in Venice is Basilica San Marco, a beautiful church that took almost 800 years to complete. After admiring the edifice’s awesome exterior, there are plenty of treasures to be view inside such as Pala d’Oro, a stunning Byzantine alter retable made of gold and encrusted with 2,000 gems. There is also a museum in the Basilica San Marco which has a number of interesting exhibitions and relics.
Galleries and Museums
As an important cultural center, there is an abundance of galleries and museums to explore while on holiday in Venice. Two of the most highly rated galleries are the Gallerie dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. The Palazzo Ducale or Doge’s Palace is one of the most popular museums in Venice. The former seat of government is extravagantly furnished and has a number of treasures on show such as the doge’s throne.
